Set Your Goals High: And Achieve Them Without Even Noticing


Sometimes, you need a little kick in the butt to get ya goin’, but hey, those goals you’re setting should not be a struggle to accomplish.  A challenge?  Yes.  To be enjoyed while conquering!

Going into the New Year with a long list of resolutions; squeezing yourself into a tiny box that human nature can’t help but break open and set free; could set you up for another year come and gone, just to see the same exact list next year.

Imagine finding enjoyment in the journey.  Looking forward everyday to do something you love to do; never rolling your eyes at the fact that you just must do this.  Put health and fitness in mind; treat your body well and kind; with group exercise you might find, that you can never fall behind!

Group X instructors Katie Hake and Courtney Cox, certainly found their way to have fun being active!

Katie says, “I love teaching Turbo Kick® because, let’s be real, it’s actually a party not a work out!”  Turbo Kick® is a combination of intense kickboxing moves, as well as, dance moves all choreographed to high energy and motivating music. It’s a cardiovascular challenge that’s a unique blend of intense intervals strength/endurance training, and a relaxing cool-down. Turbo Kick® requires no previous kickboxing experience or equipment.  “Group X is a great way to achieve fitness goals because we have such a variety of classes and you make friends and meet instructors who will hold you accountable and help you make SMART goals and achieve them!”

Courtney suggests, “Find something that you love to do!  You’re not going to keep working out if it’s just an obligation to you. Turbo isn’t for everybody but that doesn’t mean you can’t find another obsession in our four story co rec. Start rock climbing, go to a group fitness class, or watch a TV show on the treadmill (I would come to the rec and watch Ellen at 3:00 a couple times a week and didn’t even notice I was working out)”

Just listen to Zumba® instructor Mauricio Trujillo, “Have fun, be active, and the workout will take care of itself.”

You don’t necessarily have to go work out to get your goals moving.  Check out what Courtney (wall-sit on left) and fellow instructor Kelly Schreuder (push-ups on right) had going on during finals week:



  • If you’re early to class, walk up that extra fight of stairs
  • Hit a wall sit while brushing your teeth
  • When you’re waiting for the microwave, do a minute of high knees or a plank!


Some more advice from Body Sculpt instructor Megan Gardner! :



“Most of my workouts are sporadic spur of the moment.  Whenever I have extra time, I take advantage of it and go work out. The one consistent workout that I have been doing this semester has been going to the rec and swimming every morning before class.”  According to Purdue’s Registered Dietitian Annie Mahon, if you get your work out done in the morning you are more likely to consistently complete it!

“I like to set personal short-term goals for myself on either a daily or weekly basis,” Megan said. “An example of that would be to not eat anything after 9 at night for a week, or to do 5 minutes of straight abs with no break before I go to bed.”

Like Megan, Katie H also doesn’t necessarily make special New Year’s goals because she continues to set goals all year long!  Setting frequent short-term goals keeps the human mind from saturation and the likely-hood of reverting or giving up the goal decreases.  It is more likely to stick to a goal that you can accomplish in a week than a goal that you can accomplish in a year.

Courtney’s goal setting advice? :

“Don’t make some short term goal like I want to look good in a bikini or lose weight for spring break. Make a resolution to just be healthy for the long term. Invest in your workout. For example if you actually spend money on a group x pass, you will be more likely to get yourself to the gym to work out.”

According to Harvard’s Lifestyle Medicine Presentation,  “if people aim for healthy, not skinny or to lose weight, they will end up losing excess body fat without even thinking about it!”

Group X instructors Gabby Maurer and Kelly Schreuder let their goals guide them!


Gabby Maurer at the Heritage Trail Full Marathon in West Lafayette this past September. It was her first marathon and she placed third in her age/gender group!  “Setting a specific yet attainable goal inspires me to move forward.  My goal at the time was to just cross that finish line, so I was pleasantly surprised when I placed 3rd in my division.”

Kelly Schreuder has a very similar outlook on staying inspired.

“Goals. Write them down and look at them everyday. Replay them in your head every time you lose faith. There is no better feeling than accomplishing something you really want and then setting the bar even higher.  I always right down my goals.  They don’t really count unless you do.  Hang it above your bed so you can wake up with motivation so that you can go to bed with satisfaction.  I used to write a split that I wanted for swimming on my hand.  It was a reminder that I was going to do whatever it took to get that time.  You can’t forget something that’s sitting there on your hand, it glares at you all day.  It’s motivation.  It constantly asks, what are you doing right now, in this moment, to achieve this goal?  Try it.  Then once you achieve it set the bar even higher.  There’s nothing better than knowing your limit and setting a new one.”


Instructor John Biel’s philosophy?

“You are only one work out away from a good mood!”

What do all of these instructors have in common?  Not only are they trained to keep people motivated and to help people meet their goals in the most healthy and fun way possible, but they all found enjoyment in accomplishing their own fitness goals and want to help others feel that satisfaction they feel.  Having goals is important to keep moving forward, but it is just as important to have fun achieving them!
